Homeland Security Secretary Mullin says 250,000 non‑citizens on voter rolls in four states

Homeland Security Secretary Markwayne Mullin announced that the Department of Homeland Security has identified more than 250,000 non‑citizens registered to vote in California, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Nevada. He said the administration will pressure the four states to clean their voter rolls, warning that states that do not cooperate could lose federal funding or face other penalties. Mullin also cited alleged foreign interference, repeating President Donald Trump’s claim that China and Iran have targeted U.S. election systems, although no evidence has been presented to substantiate the accusations.

State officials have disputed the numbers. Nevada’s secretary of state called the claim “wildly speculative,” and other states said their voter‑registration processes already include citizenship verification safeguards. Election‑security experts say the DHS figures are likely based on commercial databases that generate many false positives, and that verified cases of non‑citizen voting are exceedingly rare. Critics also warned that the administration’s push could suppress legitimate voters and that the “SAVE” program lacks a clear methodological basis.

The controversy has sparked calls for accountability. Some lawmakers are urging investigations into whether intelligence agencies concealed information about foreign meddling in the 2020 election. No court or federal agency has confirmed the DHS estimates, and the debate is expected to influence the upcoming midterm elections.
