New Jersey glitch registers 6,600 noncitizens to vote
Governor Mikie Sherrill announced that a software error in the New Jersey Motor Vehicle Commission system mistakenly added roughly 6,600 non‑citizens to the state’s voter rolls between June 2023 and June 2024, before she took office. The individuals had correctly indicated on their driver’s‑license or ID applications that they were not U.S. citizens, but the faulty software still transmitted their information to the voter‑registration database.
A preliminary state review found that fewer than 400 of those registrants actually cast ballots. The governor said there is no evidence the error altered any election results. She ordered the immediate removal of the erroneously registered voters, an investigation into the cause of the glitch, and the replacement of the software vendor that supplied the system.
The disclosure has been cited by President Donald Trump and Republican officials as evidence of widespread non‑citizen voting, prompting renewed calls for the SAVE America Act, which would tighten citizenship verification for voter registration.
