US diesel price surges squeeze logistics industry margins
Rising diesel prices in the United States are placing significant cost pressures on the transportation and logistics sectors. Between July 5 and September 17, retail diesel prices rose by approximately 31%, while wholesale diesel prices increased at more than twice that rate. This rapid escalation has caused the price gap between retail and wholesale diesel to narrow by about 48%.
This narrowing margin creates a specific financial challenge for large shipping companies. While these firms typically purchase fuel at wholesale prices, the fuel surcharges they pass on to customers are often calculated based on retail price indices. Because wholesale costs are rising faster than retail prices, companies are unable to pass the full extent of their increased expenses to clients.
J. B. Hunt, a major player in the industry, warned that rising fuel and driver costs could negatively impact its third-quarter results, projecting a potential earnings decline of between 5% and 10%. The company is particularly vulnerable due to long-term contracts that fixed prices before the recent cost spikes.
