U.S. Treasury expands ‘Operation Economic Outcast’ sanctions against Iran
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has announced the expansion of ‘Operation Economic Outcast,’ a sanctions campaign designed to isolate Iran from the global financial system. Bessent stated that the European Union has ‘officially joined’ the effort, a claim that reflects the heightened international pressure on Tehran.
However, the European Commission’s official stance appears more measured. While the bloc welcomed efforts to ensure Iran ceases destabilizing activities and expressed readiness to take further measures to protect its interests, it did not explicitly commit to formal membership in the U.S.-led campaign. Some analysts suggest the EU’s actual economic leverage over Iran is minimal, noting that EU-Iran trade accounts for only about 2 percent of Iran’s total foreign commerce.
As part of this escalation, the U.S. Treasury has sanctioned Istanbul-based Golden Global Yatırım Bankası Anonim Şirketi and two of its affiliates. Washington alleges the bank facilitated tens of millions of dollars in payments from China for Iranian oil, subsequently directing those funds to the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC). The Treasury indicated that further sanctions against financial institutions are likely as the campaign continues.
