US Discusses Deploying Nuclear‑Capable Aircraft to Poland and Baltic NATO Allies

The United States is in talks with NATO allies about placing aircraft capable of carrying nuclear weapons in additional European locations, notably Poland and the Baltic states. The proposal is part of the NATO Nuclear Sharing program, which currently involves Germany, the Netherlands, Belgium, Italy, Turkey and, from 2025, the United Kingdom. No decision has been made yet; the move is intended to reassure allies despite planned reductions in conventional forces in Europe.

Poland has expressed strong interest since the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine. President Andrzej Duda has indicated readiness to host U.S. nuclear assets. A SW Research poll for rp.pl found that 44.6% of respondents support Poland seeking to host such weapons, with higher backing among men (55%) and higher‑income, better‑educated respondents. The discussion follows Russia’s 2023 deployment of tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus, which heightened NATO’s focus on nuclear deterrence in the region.
