U.S. Diversity Visa registration delay triggers federal lawsuit
The registration period for the U.S. Diversity Visa (DV-2027) program has not yet opened, causing significant uncertainty for potential applicants, including many in Algeria. While registration typically begins in early October, the U.S. Department of State has yet to announce an official date for the DV-2027 cycle.
In November 2025, the Department of State announced that changes were being made to the registration process and that the opening date would be communicated later. Nearly a year has passed without an official announcement. This delay has led to legal action, with the law firm Red Eagle Law filing a lawsuit in federal court against Secretary of State Marco Rubio. The firm is seeking a court order to compel the administration to provide a registration period of at least 30 days.
A hearing was held on September 24 before Federal Judge Jinsook Ohta in California. During the proceedings, government attorneys argued that it may now be too late to legally organize a full 30-day registration period before the end of the fiscal year. Applicants remain in a state of waiting as the window for the program continues to shrink.
