U.S. DOE issues emergency order to protect power grid across 17 states during heat wave
On July 26, 2026 the U.S. Department of Energy (DOE) issued an emergency order covering Arkansas and 16 neighboring states in the Southwest Power Pool (SPP) region. The order authorises SPP to dispatch specified backup generation units and auxiliary resources—including standby generators and battery storage—to maintain reliability and avoid widespread outages as extreme heat drives electricity demand higher and reduces wind‑solar output.
The order, which will remain in effect until 11:59 p.m. CDT on August 3, 2026 unless extended, was issued after a request from SPP. It allows SPP to use backup resources as a last resort before a Level 3 Energy Emergency Alert is declared.
