U.S. DOJ secures deals with NYU and UPMC to end pediatric transition procedures
The U.S. Department of Justice has reached agreements with NYU Langone Hospitals and the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center (UPMC) to end pediatric transition procedures for minors. Under the terms of the settlements, both hospital systems will cease providing puberty blockers, cross-sex hormones, and surgical procedures intended for gender transition in children.
The agreements include combined payments totaling $9.45 million, consisting of $8.5 million from NYU and $950,000 from UPMC. These resolutions follow investigations into potential violations of federal laws, including the Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act and the False Claims Act. Investigators examined allegations that false diagnosis codes were used to obtain payments from private insurers and government programs.
Attorney General Todd Blanche stated that the Department of Justice is working to reach agreements with hospitals to end these practices, noting that hospitals that target children in these practices and fraudulently obtain payment will be held accountable.
