US DOJ Settles Antitrust Case with Agri Stats to Cut Meat Prices
The U.S. Department of Justice and six states reached a settlement with data firm Agri Stats, aiming to lower consumer meat prices by restricting the company’s ability to share pricing information that prosecutors said facilitated anti‑competitive behavior in the chicken, pork and turkey markets. The agreement, pending judicial approval, limits the data Agri Stats can collect, requires it to provide information to both meat processors and buyers such as grocery stores and restaurants, and imposes a ten‑year term with a seven‑year monitoring period.
Acting Attorney General Todd Blanche said the DOJ is "laser‑focused on making everyday life affordable for all Americans," adding that the settlement is part of a broader effort to address rising food costs. Agri Stats President Eric Scholer described the deal as a resolution that allows the small company to continue serving its customers while complying with new restrictions.
