US Dollar declines as interest rate hike expectations recede

The US Dollar has ended a four-week winning streak, falling 0.4% last week to 101.79 points. This decline occurred despite higher-than-expected inflation data, with the Consumer Price Index rising 3.7% annually in September and producer prices increasing 6.3% annually. The downturn in the dollar was driven by receding expectations for interest rate hikes following comments from Federal Reserve official Kevin Warsh, who noted that while inflation remains a challenge, the global economy has shown unexpected resilience.

Concurrently, gold prices dropped by more than 3%, reaching their lowest level in seven weeks. Spot gold prices fell between 3.3% and 3.5%, while silver, platinum, and palladium also saw significant declines. Analysts attribute the drop in precious metals to rising oil prices, increasing US Treasury yields, and a strengthening dollar, which increases the opportunity cost of holding non-yielding assets. Markets are now closely monitoring upcoming US labor market data and personal consumption expenditure reports for further clues on future monetary policy.
