US Dollar exchange rate hits 250,000 toman mark in Iran
The US Dollar exchange rate in Iran has reached a significant milestone, hovering around the 250,000 to 255,000 toman mark. Recent market data indicates that the price gap between the official rate available via national ID cards and the free market has effectively closed, with rates at monitored exchange houses and street sellers aligning near 252,000 tomans.
This surge in currency value is exerting heavy pressure on the livelihoods of Iranian citizens. Economists warn that the rising exchange rate is directly impacting the cost of basic goods, housing, and services, potentially triggering widespread inflation. The volatility is exacerbated by regional tensions and structural economic challenges, leading to a significant decline in domestic purchasing power.
The economic strain is also visible in the tourism sector. Due to the high cost of transportation, accommodation, and food, domestic travel has become unaffordable for many. For instance, a three-night trip for a family of three to Mashhad via bus is estimated to cost approximately 35 million tomans, while traveling by plane would exceed 57 million tomans, costs that often exceed a standard monthly salary.
