US dollar rises against Brazilian real amid election uncertainty
The US dollar experienced volatility against the Brazilian real, driven by both international economic factors and domestic political uncertainty. Initially, the dollar rose toward R$ 5.03, influenced by higher-than-expected inflation in the United States, which heightened expectations for US monetary policy tightening.
However, the currency later saw a sharper climb, closing near R$ 5.08. This surge was attributed to investor caution ahead of the release of Datafolha polling data. Market participants expressed concern regarding potential increases in voting intentions for President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, as an opposition victory is viewed by some as a prerequisite for fiscal policy changes starting in 2027. Additionally, reports of potential campaign promises, such as ‘zero tariffs’ for public transport on weekends and holidays, contributed to market defensive positioning.
Despite these fluctuations, the real has shown resilience earlier in the year. The Central Bank reported a significant positive exchange flow of US$ 2.416 billion between October 5 and 9. While the dollar has seen recent gains, the real remains one of the better-performing emerging market currencies for the year.
