Egypt faces $62.8 billion in external debt obligations through 2027
Egypt is facing significant external debt obligations totaling approximately $62.8 billion between April 2026 and March 2027. According to World Bank data, this amount consists of $55.8 billion in principal payments and roughly $7 billion in interest.
Of the total principal, $21.1 billion is held in deposits and foreign currencies at the Central Bank of Egypt. A significant portion of these funds includes Gulf deposits that may be renewed or converted into investments, which could alleviate the immediate pressure on foreign exchange resources.
The largest single payment is scheduled for the second quarter of 2026, amounting to $24.39 billion. The quarterly breakdown includes $13.94 billion in Q3, $13.7 billion in Q4, and $10.8 billion in Q1 2027.
Concurrently, the US Dollar has shown volatility against the Egyptian Pound. Recent banking updates indicate the dollar has been trading near the 50 EGP mark, with rates fluctuating between approximately 49.87 EGP for purchase and 50.35 EGP for sale across various local banks, including the Central Bank of Egypt, National Bank of Egypt, and Banque Misr.
