Brazil economy faces volatility amid election pledges and rising US yields

As Brazil approaches the October 2026 elections, President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva has met with business leaders in São Paulo to pledge fiscal and economic stability. Lula emphasized that fiscal responsibility is mandatory to protect the poor and highlighted that his administration moved the country from a 2.8% deficit to a 0.1% surplus. He also expressed openness to discussing judicial reforms, including potential term limits for Supreme Court justices.

Simultaneously, the Brazilian financial market is experiencing significant volatility. The US dollar approached the R$ 5.20 mark, driven by rising US Treasury yields, which reached 5.22%—the highest level since 2007—due to inflation concerns and expectations of sustained high interest rates from the Federal Reserve. This has triggered capital flight from emerging markets like Brazil.

Domestic economic indicators also show pressure, with the IPCA-15 inflation index rising by 0.70% in September, exceeding market forecasts. While the Ibovespa saw recent declines, some market participants remain optimistic about potential shifts in economic policy following the upcoming election. To manage currency volatility, the Central Bank of Brazil intervened by selling US$ 1 billion through simultaneous line auctions.
