US dollar serves as a tool of global geopolitical influence

The United States dollar serves as a primary global reserve currency, functioning as a critical tool for American geopolitical influence. Beyond its economic roles in exchange and value storage, the dollar provides Washington with significant financial, diplomatic, and strategic advantages that allow the U.S. to project power and protect national interests without necessarily relying on military force.

The current monetary order traces its roots back to the 1971 collapse of the Bretton Woods system, when President Richard Nixon ended the dollar's convertibility into gold. Despite predictions that the loss of gold backing would lead to a decline in the currency's status, the dollar maintained dominance due to the size of the U.S. economy, the liquidity of its financial markets, and the strength of its institutions. This position was further bolstered in the 1970s through strategic alliances that secured the dollar's role in international petroleum trade.
