U.S. DOT releases national strategy for autonomous vehicles

The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) has released a national strategy report titled ‘America Leads: DOT’s National Strategy for Automated Vehicles’ to facilitate the broader deployment of autonomous technology.

Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated the plan aims to empower innovators to build safer and smarter technologies while reducing roadway fatalities. The strategy, which spans fiscal years 2026–2030, focuses on eliminating regulatory red tape and updating safety oversight.

Key components of the plan include the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) revamping operational safety regulations for commercial vehicles equipped with automated driving systems. Additionally, the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration (PHMSA) is seeking comments on potential rule changes regarding the transportation of hazardous materials via highly automated systems.
