U.S. Drug Czar Sara Carter Targets Mexican Officials Linked to Cartels

Sara Carter, director of the U.S. Office of National Drug Control Policy, said the United States is pursuing criminal and intelligence actions against Mexican public officials alleged to protect drug cartels. She noted that investigations prioritize officials connected to the Los Chapitos and Los Mayitos factions of the Sinaloa Cartel, with ongoing extradition requests and arrest warrants.

Carter emphasized cooperation with Mexican security forces, stating that U.S. agencies share strategic intelligence with the Mexican army and Guard to enable high‑impact operations. She warned, “We are attacking even those within the government who have sold out to the cartels and facilitated their operations.”

The remarks come amid heightened diplomatic tension after a U.S. indictment of Sinaloa Governor Rubén Rocha Moya and nine other Mexican officials. Mexico’s government has rejected what it calls foreign interference in its sovereign legal processes.
