US economic pressures mount amid trade tensions with Canada

Small business owners in Michigan are reporting significant financial strain due to rising inflation and trade policies. Michael Howard, a carpenter and local official in Warren County, notes that tariffs on Canadian timber have substantially increased the cost of raw materials like pine wood.

To compensate for higher costs, businesses are forced to raise prices, which has led to lost contracts and staff reductions. Howard reported losing $10,000 in business during the third quarter. Additionally, high gasoline prices, exceeding $4 per gallon, have made logistics and deliveries increasingly difficult for local entrepreneurs.

According to a Pew Research survey, 84 percent of Americans consider the economy to be the most important issue heading into the midterm elections.
