US economic sanctions against Iran threaten global saffron trade

The United States is intensifying economic pressure on Iran through 'Operation Economic Outcast,' a strategy aimed at isolating the country financially to prevent nuclear weapons development. U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent announced this economic warfare, which targets not only Iran but also nations that maintain significant trade relations with the country.

This geopolitical tension is expected to impact global commodities, specifically the saffron market. Iran produces over 90 percent of the world's saffron, a critical ingredient for Spanish paella. As the world's largest importer of saffron, Spain faces potential supply disruptions due to the sanctions. Other major trading partners of Iran, including China, Iraq, the United Arab Emirates, and Turkey, may also face U.S. economic scrutiny.

Despite rising oil prices and geopolitical instability following Iranian attacks on U.S. bases in Jordan, cryptocurrency markets have shown resilience. Bitcoin and several altcoins, including Arbitrum, which saw a 31 percent increase, have experienced price recoveries following recent volatility.
