U.S. Education Secretary Linda McMahon Calls for University Reform

U.S. Secretary of Education Linda McMahon sent a nationwide letter to every university president and governing board, urging institutions to publish a public statement outlining reforms and to answer seven specific questions by the end of 2026. The questions cover transparency and merit in admissions, free‑speech and open inquiry, intellectual pluralism, affordability and student outcomes, academic standards in the age of artificial intelligence, safeguarding research from foreign influence, and prioritising American interests.

McMahon said the initiative responds to polling that shows historic lows in public trust in higher education across political parties and demographics. She cited recent concerns raised by leaders at Yale University, Vanderbilt University and Washington University about diluted standards, opaque admissions and politicisation of the humanities and social sciences. The letter does not attach funding conditions but seeks greater transparency and accountability to restore confidence in the sector.
