US election officials prepare for midterms amid ballot and security concerns

Election administrators and activists are addressing various logistical and security concerns ahead of the upcoming midterm elections. During a roundtable hosted by the Partnership for Large Election Jurisdictions, officials identified mail-in ballot processes and citizenship verification as primary issues.

In some jurisdictions, such as Allegheny County, Pennsylvania, there has been a noted decrease in mail-in ballot requests, though a spike in requests followed a Supreme Court ruling regarding postmarked ballots. In Los Angeles County, officials anticipate shifts in voter behavior due to changes in U.S. Postal Service postmarking policies, leading to an increased reliance on alternative return methods like drop boxes.

Simultaneously, legal and civil rights concerns have emerged regarding the potential presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officers at polling locations. While the Trump administration has stated it has no current plans to deploy ICE officers to polls, the Democratic National Committee is preparing legal action to prevent any such presence. Activists express concern that immigration enforcement rhetoric could intimidate Latino, Asian American, and Black voters.
