US election officials prepare for potential seizure of voting materials

Election officials across the United States are preparing for the possibility of federal law enforcement seizing ballots and voting equipment during active elections. This concern follows reports that Donald Trump expressed regret over not ordering the National Guard to seize voting machines in swing states following the 2020 election.

In January, the FBI conducted raids on election offices in Fulton County, Georgia, to collect sensitive voting records from 2020. Legal experts and organizations, such as the Brennan Center for Justice, have characterized these actions as an escalation in efforts to discredit previous election results and potentially interfere with future processes.

While some right-wing media figures have supported the seizure of election materials, legal scholars note that the president lacks constitutional authority over federal election administration. Experts warn that the confiscation of ballots or infrastructure by law enforcement could be used to call election results into question.
