U.S. election updates: Pennsylvania primary bill and Arizona midterm preparations
In Pennsylvania, the state House passed House Bill 280, which would allow registered voters with no political party affiliation to participate in primary elections by selecting which party's primary they wish to vote in. The bill, which passed 115-88, does not permit unaffiliated voters to participate in internal party elections, such as committee seat selections. Pennsylvania is among the few remaining states to maintain closed primaries.
In Arizona, preparations are underway for the 2026 midterm elections. Voters will decide seats for the U.S. House of Representatives, the state governor, secretary of state, attorney general, and all chambers of the Arizona Legislature. The upcoming ballot will also include several measures regarding mail-in voting ID requirements, diversity efforts in public institutions, and photo traffic enforcement systems.
