US electric vehicle market shows mixed sales and shifting forecasts
The United States electric vehicle (EV) market is experiencing a period of mixed results and shifting expectations. In the third quarter of 2026, while global trends toward battery power continue, US consumer adoption has slowed.
Automaker performance varies significantly. Toyota has seen an uptick in EV sales, with its bZ series becoming a top seller behind Tesla and Hyundai. Toyota's electrified vehicles, including hybrids and plug-in hybrids, accounted for over 57 percent of its US sales in Q3. Conversely, the 'Big Three' American automakers have faced challenges; GM and Ford reported declines in sales, while Stellantis saw a slight increase driven by internal combustion models like the RAM 1500, despite a 96 percent drop in Jeep Wagoneer S electric unit sales.
General Motors CEO Mary Barra has adopted a more measured stance on future forecasting due to changing regulatory incentives and consumer habits. While she stated, “I’m done making predictions,” she maintains that EVs remain the long-term goal for the company. Barra did provide a specific target for autonomous technology, forecasting that GM will offer hands-off highway driving on the Cadillac Escalade IQ by 2028, marking the beginning of a transition toward full autonomy.
