BYD drives Brazil's electric vehicle surge as sales climb nationwide
Brazil's electric vehicle market continued its rapid expansion in 2026. In February 2024, BEV models topped sales of electrified vehicles with 3,639 units, representing 34.82% of the sector, according to the Associação Brasileira do Veículo Elétrico (ABVE). The momentum accelerated, and by June 2026 the country recorded 21,612 newly registered electric cars, placing Brazil third worldwide after Germany, the United Kingdom and France in absolute sales.
The Chinese automaker BYD emerged as the dominant player. In the state of Acre, BYD accounted for 353 of the 453 electrified vehicles sold between January and July 2026, a share of 77.92%, with the Dolphin Mini GS5EV alone delivering 215 units (47.46% of Acre's total). Nationally, BYD led the first‑half 2026 rankings, with the Dolphin Mini model selling 35,680 units and the Dolphin second with 18,054 units, securing the top two spots among the country's best‑selling BEVs.
While Brazil's market grew, China's overall vehicle sales fell 3.2% year‑on‑year to 2.81 million units in June 2026, marking the eighth consecutive month of decline. Nonetheless, BYD retained its position as China's top manufacturer, delivering 177,485 units, and Leapmotor recorded a record 72,376 vehicles, a 61% increase from the previous year.
