U.S. embargo tightens economic strain on Cuba

The United States' economic embargo on Cuba has caused losses of about $7.55 billion between March 2024 and February 2025, according to Cuban reports. The sanctions have severely affected the health system, delaying more than 100,000 surgeries, including 12,000 pediatric procedures, and have led to rotating power outages and fuel shortages that halted waste collection and disrupted other essential services.

Cuban residents living in Panama presented testimony before the Latin American and Caribbean Parliament (Parlatino), condemning recent U.S. executive orders that intensify the energy blockade, media restrictions, and commercial barriers. They warned that these measures impede the delivery of medical supplies, energy backup systems and other humanitarian aid, and they accused senior U.S. officials of committing crimes against humanity and genocide against the Cuban people.
