US Embassy in Banjul Hosts Forum to Boost Gambian Journalist Exchanges

The U.S. Embassy in Banjul hosted a Foreign Press Centre forum on Monday to promote journalist exchange programmes and strengthen professional ties between Gambian media and the United States. The event gathered journalists, government officials, diplomats, civil‑society representatives and alumni of the State Department’s reporting tours.

Chargé d’Affaires Robert Anderson highlighted the role of a free press in the 250th anniversary of the U.S. Declaration of Independence and described the tours as giving Gambian reporters firsthand access to U.S. institutions, policymakers and communities. Foreign Press Centre Director Jeffrey Weinschenker stressed the importance of fact‑based, on‑the‑ground reporting, while Gambia Press Union programme officer Juldeh Njie praised the professional development opportunities.

Gambian journalists—including Omar Bah of The Standard, Alieu Ceesay of QTV and Kaddijatou Jawo of Malagen—shared experiences from their U.S. assignments, underscoring the programme’s impact on coverage of elections, migration, governance and climate change.
