U.S. Embassy in Brasília vandalized during MST protest
The walls of the United States Embassy in Brasília were vandalized on Thursday, August 13, during a protest organized by the MST (Movimento dos Trabalhadores Rurais Sem Terra) and Levante Popular da Juventude. Protesters spray-painted messages in both Portuguese and English, including the phrase “The USA makes war and profits from death,” and burned a U.S. flag. The demonstration was part of a national movement commemorating the centenary of Fidel Castro.
The incident occurs amid heightened diplomatic tensions between Brazil and the United States. Recent friction includes the imposition of a 25% tariff on certain Brazilian products by the Trump administration and the revocation of the visa for Brazilian Ambassador Maria Luiza Ribeiro Viotti. Brazil has appealed these tariffs to the World Trade Organization.
The U.S. Embassy has labeled the acts of vandalism “unacceptable” and is working with local authorities. The Military Police of the Federal District has arrested at least one suspect in connection with the incident.
