US Embassy in Nigeria warns dual nationals to use only US passports
The United States Embassy (Mission) in Nigeria issued an advisory on its official X account on 26 July 2026, reminding that all U.S. citizens – including dual nationals and children – must travel to and from the United States with a valid U.S. passport. It warned that dual‑national U.S. citizens may not use a foreign passport to apply for an Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA), noting that the Department of Homeland Security routinely denies or cancels such ESTA applications.
The statement also urged U.S. citizens living abroad, particularly those in Nigeria, to verify that their passports are up to date and to renew any that are expired or close to expiration. It reiterated that many countries require passports to remain valid for at least six months beyond the intended date of entry.
