Alfonso Fernández Magallón captured in Michoacán, sparking road blockades and vehicle fires FAST-MOVING
The Mexican Army detained Alfonso Fernández Magallón, also known as “Poncho La Quiringua”, in the municipality of Los Reyes, Michoacán. He is identified as the leader of the Cartel de Los Reyes and a former member of the Cárteles Unidos, a group the United States has designated a foreign terrorist organization. U.S. authorities offered a reward of up to five million dollars for information leading to his capture, and he faces an arrest warrant for illegal deprivation of liberty and mutiny, as well as U.S. charges of conspiracy to traffic methamphetamine, cocaine and fentanyl and use of firearms in drug‑trafficking.
Following the operation, members of the cartel carried out road blockades and set vehicles on fire in the municipalities of Los Reyes and Peribán. Federal and state security forces, including the Army, Guard National, Navy and the Secretariat of Security and Protection, deployed helicopters and ground units to restore order and reopen the affected highways. The U.S. Embassy issued a travel alert for Michoacán, warning of heightened criminal activity.
The capture is being presented by Secretary of Security and Protection, Omar García Harfuch, as a major blow to the criminal organization that has operated in the region for years, coordinating drug trafficking from Colombia to the United States and recruiting former military personnel.
