U.S. visa revocations spark diplomatic tension with Mexico
The United States has revoked more than 175,000 visas since the start of Donald Trump's second term in January 2025, according to the U.S. Department of State. While officials state these cancellations are based on criminal activity, fraud, and national security risks, the move has sparked significant diplomatic tension with Mexico.
Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has criticized the revocations, characterizing them as a political tool used for interference in Mexican internal affairs. Sheinbaum emphasized that a visa is merely a travel document and does not define a person's value or sovereignty. This criticism follows the high-profile cancellation of the visa belonging to Andrés Manuel López Beltrán, son of former President Andrés Manuel López Obrador.
In response, the U.S. Embassy in Mexico and Secretary of State Marco Rubio have maintained that visas are a privilege, not a constitutional right. Rubio asserted that the U.S. reserves the authority to withdraw visas from any individual engaging in activities contrary to U.S. national interests, regardless of their political status or public influence.
