Chris Wright affirms future Venezuelan elections and $2B oil deal

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has affirmed that elections will eventually take place in Venezuela, though he acknowledged that no specific date has been established. During an interview with Univision, Wright explained that the Trump administration is focused on creating the necessary economic and political conditions to facilitate a democratic process. These conditions include stabilizing the economy, releasing political prisoners, fostering political reconciliation, updating electoral registries, and strengthening the rule of law.

In tandem with these political goals, Wright highlighted significant energy developments. He detailed a memorandum of understanding between the U.S.-based Continental Resources and Venezuela’s state-owned oil company, PDVSA, to develop the Ayacucho 2 block in the Orinoco Oil Belt. The project involves an investment of approximately $2 billion aimed at drilling new wells to increase oil and gas production. Wright emphasized that this agreement is intended to be a long-term institutional commitment that will persist regardless of future changes in the Venezuelan government. He noted that increasing the global energy supply through Venezuelan production could help lower international and domestic energy prices.
