U.S. Energy Secretary signals upcoming Venezuelan elections

U.S. Energy Secretary Chris Wright has stated that new presidential elections in Venezuela are approaching, though a specific date has not been set. This comes during a period of political transition following the departure of Nicolás Maduro and the formation of an interim government led by Delcy Rodríguez.

Wright emphasized that for elections to be free and fair, several institutional improvements are required, including updating the electoral registry, strengthening the rule of law, and releasing political prisoners. He also noted ongoing dialogue between Venezuelan representatives and opposition sectors to facilitate a democratic transition.

Beyond political shifts, the U.S. and Venezuela are advancing energy sector agreements aimed at increasing Venezuelan oil production and attracting investment. Wright also addressed humanitarian cooperation, noting that the U.S. provided immediate assistance to communities affected by devastating earthquakes on June 24. He characterized the evolving relationship as a partnership intended to build a more stable future for both nations, extending beyond strictly economic interests.
