US Energy Secretary doubts Iran nuclear deal, suggests destroying capabilities
US Energy Secretary Chris Wright has expressed doubt regarding the possibility of reaching a nuclear agreement with Iran, suggesting that a diplomatic solution might be delayed until a future Iranian administration takes office. Wright stated that if negotiations fail, the United States could opt to simply destroy Iran's nuclear development capabilities.
These remarks come amid escalating military tensions in the Strait of Hormuz. Recent hostilities include Iran bombing a US vessel in response to American strikes on Iranian tankers. The conflict, which has lasted over six months, has caused significant volatility in energy markets, with US gasoline prices reaching a record high of approximately $4.14 per gallon.
Regarding energy security, Wright noted that the seven-day average oil flow through the Strait of Hormuz has reached a record high of over nine million barrels per day. When including regional pipeline flows through Saudi Arabia and the UAE, the total regional oil flow is estimated to be between 13 and 14 million barrels per day. Wright also noted that while Iran has extensive missile infrastructure, it currently lacks the capacity to produce new missiles.
