US envoys and Vatican officials seek mediation for Ukraine conflict

US special envoy Steve Witkoff and advisor Jared Kushner are expected to visit Kyiv to discuss potential peace agreements regarding the war in Ukraine. Analysts suggest Ukraine has strengthened its negotiating position due to its ability to inflict significant economic damage on Russia through deep-strike capabilities, potentially moving discussions away from previous ideas involving territorial concessions.

Simultaneously, the Kremlin has expressed openness to international mediation. Spokesperson Dmitri Peskov stated that the Kremlin would welcome mediators seeking a political solution, specifically mentioning the US representatives and Vatican Secretary for Relations with States, Paul Richard Gallagher. While the exact timing of the US delegation's visit to Russia remains unconfirmed, Peskov noted that they are welcome interlocutors for President Vladimir Putin. Additionally, Gallagher is scheduled to visit Moscow between August 25 and 28 to engage in diplomatic contacts.
