US envoys Kushner and Witkoff face challenges in Ukraine ceasefire mission
US envoys Jared Kushner and Steve Witkoff recently conducted diplomatic visits to Moscow and Kyiv in an attempt to facilitate ceasefire negotiations in the Russia-Ukraine war. While President Donald Trump suggested that Vladimir Putin is open to a deal, the diplomatic efforts have faced significant challenges and criticism.
Following a brief pause in hostilities during the envoys' visit, Russia resumed heavy missile and drone strikes on Kyiv, resulting in at least five civilian deaths. Additionally, a Russian drone violated Moldovan airspace, an incident Moldova’s US Ambassador Vladislav Kulminski suggested was likely intentional, which delayed President Volodymyr Zelenskyy’s travel to Norway.
Ukrainian President Zelenskyy has welcomed the US involvement and described certain proposals as worthy of discussion, though he warned that the conflict could persist until 2027. Meanwhile, Russian officials have maintained that Moscow remains committed to achieving all its military objectives in Ukraine.
