US escalates trade tensions with Canada and Iran

Trade tensions between the United States and Canada have escalated following the collapse of recent commercial negotiations. The U.S. government has announced the imposition of 50% tariffs on certain Canadian imports, affecting an estimated $20 billion in goods, or approximately 5.5% of Canadian exports to the U.S. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney announced the suspension of trade talks and instructed negotiators to return to Ottawa, citing unfair and non-economic last-minute changes to U.S. terms.

Simultaneously, the United States is intensifying its economic campaign against Iran. President Donald Trump has signaled an “economic D-Day,” warning that any nation maintaining economic ties with Iran—including through oil purchases or maritime transport—will face significant consequences. U.S. officials have adopted a “with us or against us” stance, stating the Treasury Department will use its full authority to impose sanctions on those assisting the Iranian economy.
