US-EU trade relations and new family support policies discussed
European Commissioner Maroš Šefčovič has discussed the complexities of trade relations between the European Union and the United States. During negotiations at the White House, Šefčovič addressed the ongoing tension regarding tariffs, noting that while the EU has removed duties on certain American industrial goods, the U.S. maintains tariffs of up to 15 percent on most European goods and up to 50 percent on specific steel and aluminum products.
Šefčovič noted that the U.S. administration's priority is the revitalization of domestic industry and the balancing of trade relations. He described the current trade compromise as acceptable given the difficult economic period the United States is navigating.
In a separate policy development, the Trump administration is reportedly planning a significant shift in family support. The proposed plan aims to provide $9,000 annually per child to families where one parent remains at home to care for children, provided the family's income is below the median and the other parent is employed. This initiative is designed to support traditional family structures and alleviate the financial burden on households with stay-at-home parents.
