US EV prices fall as cost gap with gas vehicles narrows
In the United States, the price gap between electric vehicles (EVs) and internal combustion engine vehicles is narrowing. According to data from Kelley Blue Book, the average transaction price for a new EV was $54,813 in August, representing a 2.7% decrease year-over-year. In contrast, the average price for all new vehicles rose 1.9% over the same period to $50,089.
While EVs still maintain a premium of approximately $4,724 over the market-wide average, the price difference has dropped significantly from a 16% gap recorded at the same time last year to just 9.4% in August. Tesla remains a major influence on these averages due to its high sales volume, with an average transaction price of $52,616 in August.
Industry insights from Cox Automotive suggest that the downward trend in EV pricing is being supported by more affordable models from manufacturers such as Toyota, Chevrolet, Hyundai, and Subaru. Increased market share for these more budget-friendly options is helping to drive down the overall average cost of electric models.
