US Export Controls Force Anthropic to Shut Down Fable AI Model

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei, who has warned that AI needs strict regulation, saw the company’s latest model taken offline after the U.S. government imposed export controls. The model, known as Mythos in its unrestricted form and Fable when heavily bounded, was deemed to pose a security risk following a report from Amazon, a major investor with a $13 billion stake. The White House ordered Anthropic to block all access, effectively halting the service worldwide.

The dispute stems from Anthropic’s refusal earlier this year to allow the Pentagon to use its technology for mass surveillance and fully autonomous weapons. In response, the Department of Defense labeled Anthropic a "supply chain risk," restricting its ability to secure government contracts. The export‑control action has triggered concerns across Europe, where companies and researchers fear a new AI blackout and scramble for policy responses.

European officials warn that U.S. export rules now treat access by foreign employees as an export, forcing firms to erect “Chinese walls” around their staff. The episode highlights growing tension between national security priorities and the global development of advanced AI.
