US Extends Haitian TPS, Aiding Florida Nursing Home Workforce

The White House postponed the expiration of Temporary Protected Status (TPS) for Haitian nationals to July 24, keeping work permits active for at least 350,000 Haitians in the United States. Roughly half of those holders live in Florida, where an estimated one in five works in health‑care occupations, meaning as many as 35,000 workers could be affected.

Florida’s largest nursing‑home association asked the Department of Homeland Security for an exemption to allow Haitian TPS holders to continue employment in long‑term care, warning that losing even a small share of these experienced caregivers would harm continuity of care for residents. The association said, “Our request is driven by one priority: protecting access to quality care for Florida’s seniors and individuals with disabilities.” The extension provides immediate relief to hospitals, nursing homes and other facilities that rely on Haitian workers in the health sector.
