U.S. FAA Enforces Remote ID and Registration Rules for Drone Operators

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) requires drones weighing more than 250 g to carry a Remote ID (RID) module that meets FAA certification. Several commercial modules are available, offering features such as GPS tracking, weather resistance and battery life of up to four hours.

Recreational flyers must also pass the free TRUST safety test, respect airspace restrictions and register any drone over 250 g. Registration costs $5 and is valid for three years. Operators who use drones for profit must follow Part 107 rules, which mandate registration regardless of weight. Non‑compliance can result in fines and loss of flying privileges.
