US faces critical firefighter shortages amid rising wildfire risks

The United States is facing a critical shortage of firefighters, particularly within the US Forest Service (USFS). Despite official claims of a strong workforce, internal reports and personnel indicate that the agency is struggling to keep pace with escalating wildfire conditions. Staffing gaps in both frontline roles and leadership have created operational bottlenecks, forcing existing crews to work extreme overtime. In some instances, firefighters have worked over 1,000 hours of overtime in a single season.

Compounding the professional staffing crisis is the heavy reliance on volunteer firefighters. Approximately 65% of all firefighters in the U.S. serve in a volunteer capacity, with roughly 85% of fire departments relying on volunteers either entirely or partially. These volunteers are essential for maintaining emergency coverage in suburban and rural areas where full-time career departments are financially unsustainable. Volunteer services are estimated to save communities nearly $140 billion annually in personnel costs.
