US faces major measles outbreak as French students lead union-backed protests

The United States is experiencing its most significant measles outbreak since 1991, with nearly 3,900 reported cases according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). In Pennsylvania, over 1,000 cases have been confirmed since April, resulting in 198 hospitalizations and five deaths. This surge is part of a broader trend, with significant outbreaks also reported in Texas, Utah, South Carolina, and Ohio. In New York, the governor has declared a state of emergency in rural areas to expand the authority of healthcare workers to administer vaccines and conduct testing.

In France, high school students are leading protests demanding increased school resources, better facilities, and an end to inequalities caused by the 'Parcoursup' university admissions platform. These demonstrations have gained significant support from major education, student, and agricultural unions. The CGT union and the Confédération Paysanne have mobilized to support the students, with the latter calling on farmers to join blockades with tractors. While unions describe the students' demands as 'fair and legitimate,' the Prime Minister's office has characterized aspects of the movement as 'urban violence.'
