US farmer sentiment declines as input costs reach record concern

US farmer sentiment declined in September, according to the Purdue University/CME Group Ag Economy Barometer. The index dropped to 123 from 135 in August, driven by an 18-point decrease in the Index of Current Conditions.

Rising input costs have become a primary concern for a record 52% of the 400 farmers surveyed. Financial outlooks are mixed; while the Index of Future Expectations fell by 9 points—with 35% of respondents anticipating worse financial conditions in a year—the Long-Term Farmland Value Expectations Index reached a new high of 168.

Michael Langemeier of Purdue’s Center for Commercial Agriculture noted a divide between near-term financial pressures and positive long-term expectations for farmland values. Other indices, including the Farm Financial Performance Index and the Farm Capital Investment Index, also saw declines.
