US FBI reports $893 million AI‑linked fraud losses, warns of invoice scams
The FBI’s Internet Crime Complaint Center released its 2025 report, identifying more than $893 million in losses from fraud schemes that specifically mentioned artificial intelligence. The AI‑linked complaints numbered 22,364 and were dominated by investment fraud, which alone accounted for $632 million of the AI‑referenced losses. Other AI‑enabled scams included business‑email compromise ($30 million), confidence and romance scams ($19 million), and employment fraud ($13 million).
Separate analysis of invoice fraud highlights how cybercriminals alter PDF invoices to divert payments. The FBI reported over $2.7 billion in losses from business‑email compromise and invoice fraud in 2023. Fraudsters typically swap bank account details in legitimate invoices or fabricate supplier invoices, leaving forensic markers in the PDF's producer field and xref table. Structural PDF forensics can reveal these edits, a capability lacking in most OCR‑based accounts‑payable automation platforms.
