US FCC grants Intel one-year exemption for foreign robotic equipment

The US Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has granted a one-year temporary exemption to Intel, allowing the semiconductor giant to continue using certain advanced robotic equipment manufactured abroad. This decision aims to prevent disruptions in domestic semiconductor manufacturing services for Intel's customers.

Intel argued that Automated Guided Vehicles (AGVs), which are classified as robots by regulators, are vital to its US factory operations. These vehicles have been used for over two decades to transport materials within semiconductor facilities. Intel noted that the US domestic market currently lacks viable replacements, and replacing the entire AGV system would take years and cause severe production delays.

The exemption follows an FCC ban issued in July on the import of certain humanoid robots, quadruped robots, and networked inverters from China. That ban was part of a broader strategy to protect US artificial intelligence infrastructure from national security risks and to encourage the reshoring of critical industrial supply chains.
