Ilhan Omar faces federal investigation into citizenship status

Federal agents conducted a search of Representative Ilhan Omar’s Washington, D.C. residence as part of an ongoing criminal investigation into her immigration status and citizenship. During the raid, authorities seized Omar’s cellphone and other personal items. Investigators are reportedly examining whether Omar or her late father misrepresented her age on immigration paperwork in 2000 to facilitate her automatic citizenship as a minor.

Republican leaders, including House Majority Whip Tom Emmer and border czar Tom Homan, have stated that Omar could face imprisonment and deportation if the allegations of fraud are proven. Homan noted that denaturalization is a legal process used when evidence shows lying during the naturalization process.

Former President Barack Obama has condemned the investigation, accusing the Trump administration of weaponizing federal power to intimidate a political opponent. Obama argued that Omar acquired citizenship legally at age 17 and characterized the probe as an attempt to target her for her political criticisms of the president. Omar has denied all wrongdoing, maintaining that her citizenship is valid.
