US Federal Election Commission website taken offline after hacking attempt
The US Federal Election Commission (FEC) has disabled its electronic filing system following a suspected hacking attempt. The agency confirmed the outage, stating that IT staff are working to restore services.
The disruption occurs approximately one week before the US midterm elections. While the outage is not expected to impact the casting of ballots, it has prevented political organizations and committees from submitting mandatory 24-hour and 48-hour campaign spending reports. These filings are critical for analyzing expenditure and spending by political groups in individual races.
Although the electronic filing system is unavailable, the FEC noted that users can still access previously submitted reports through its website.
