US Federal Government redirects billions from California high-speed rail to national projects

The Federal Railroad Administration has announced a $5.3 billion investment in rail projects across 23 states. Transportation Secretary Sean Duffy stated that approximately $2 billion of this funding is being redirected from previously unspent federal funds originally allocated to California’s high-speed rail project.

The redirected funds are intended for rail safety upgrades, closing dangerous railroad crossings, upgrading aging infrastructure, and purchasing new Amtrak trainsets. Within California, more than $200 million is designated for various rail projects, including $40 million for a project in Fairfield.

Separately, the California High-Speed Rail Authority is progressing with the development of its Orta Vadi Heavy Maintenance Facility. After evaluating 11 potential locations, the authority has narrowed the selection to two candidate sites in the Central Valley: one near southern Fresno and another near Hanford. The facility is intended to serve as a hub for train assembly, repairs, and system overhauls.
